City of Wyoming's medical marijuana ban goes up in smoke

Michigan’s Court of Appeals has struck down a city ordinance banning medical marijuana. Supporters of the voter approved medical marijuana law are calling it a huge victory.

The Grand Rapids suburb of Wyoming is one of several Michigan cities or townships that have restricted the medical marijuana act voters passed in 2008.

Wyoming resident and medical marijuana patient John Ter Beek sued the city in 2010. Shortly after the ACLU joined the case.

Online exhanges for health coverage not ready yet

There's been no action by the state House yet on creating online exchanges for people to comparison shop for health coverage.

That’s after another day of hearings by two state House committees on the question.

Governor Rick Snyder is pushing the Legislature to act quickly so Michigan qualifies for federal planning grants, and does not risk being forced into a federal system.

Representative Al Pscholka chairs the House budget subcommittee that would fund the exchange.

He says the numbers are big, and he wants to step carefully.

Medical technician may have infected Michigan patients with Hepatitis C

Michigan health officials say a hospital worker who allegedly spread Hepatitis-C to patients at a hospital in New Hampshire also worked at several facilities in Michigan.

They suggest former patients at those Michigan hospitals may want to get tested for Hepatitis-C.

Transplant Games of America begin today in Grand Rapids

Steve Vanheest has been training for the Transplant Games of America at the Hunting YMCA in Grand Rapids.

The Transplant Games of America are traditionally put on once every two years for athletes who are organ donation recipients. Living organ donors can also compete. Hundreds, if not a thousand athletes from all over the country are expected to compete in a dozen sporting events including track, volleyball, golf, basketball, tennis and several others.

The games are held to promote organ donation and, according to the organization’s website “to show the world that transplantation is a treatment that does indeed work.”
