Top federal prosecutor for Western Michigan to resign

Patrick Miles, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, has announced that he will step down from office on Inauguration Day, January 20th.

Miles was appointed by President Barak Obama in 2012.

He is the first African-American to have held the position of U.S. Attorney in Michigan's Western District.

The office covers 49 counties, including Michigan's entire Upper Peninsula.

Miles said protection of the vulnerable has been one of his top priorities.

Federal and local authorities have charged three people with being involved in an interstate sex trafficking ring out of Lansing. 

The ring allegedly sent underage girls to Arizona and Alabama.

New chambers of commerce are starting to form in cities across Michigan to support African-American business leaders. The Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce is working to charter local black chambers in several cities. The group wants to empower African-American business leaders to overcome unique challenges, like historically bad access to capital.

Leaders of the newly-formed Grand Rapids Black Chamber of Commerce are hoping to empower African-American business owners.
