State of the State 2018

steve carmody / Michigan Radio

This week, Gov. Snyder rolls out his final budget plan.

He’s promised more money for K-12 education.

In his State of the State address last month, Snyder promised the largest increase in minimum per pupil funding in 15 years. We’ll find out exactly how much that will be when his budget plan is delivered to state lawmakers on Wednesday.

Michigan teachers will be closely watching.

The Michigan Education Association calls news media reports saying the governor will propose a $233 increase “promising.”

Last night Governor Rick Snyder delivered his eighth and final State of State address at the Capitol in Lansing. One of the topics Snyder hit on was "civility" in politics.

"One of the warning signals, I'll tell you, if you hear someone running for office, and this is my personal view, and they talk about fighting, the red light should be flashing," he said. "Who are we fighting? Ourselves. That's not right. Fighting does have a role. It was on the beaches of Normandy, not on the beaches of Lake Michigan."

Governor Rick Snyder declared victory over the state’s economic hardships last night, in his eighth and final State of the State address. The governor says choices made over the last seven years leave room now for more investment in schools and infrastructure.

But it’s not clear that he can win support for his plans in the Legislature.

Snyder spent most of the hour long speech reviewing his years as governor, and compared Michigan today to the days of the Great Recession, when the unemployment rate was double what it is now.

Tonight, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will deliver his annual State of the State address. Because of term limits, it will be his last.

You can watch the speech here tonight. You’ll also hear lots of analysis afterward, and on Stateside tomorrow.

Governor Rick Snyder brings his sound fiscal-management-show to the stage one last time tomorrow at the Capitol.

But, he’s delivering his final State of the State address to an audience of lawmakers who just dealt him a rare veto override.

Snyder could be celebrating eight years of Republican control in Lansing while he’s been in office. Except Snyder has often found himself on the other side of the Republican majorities in the House and Senate.
