A new group is asking the state of Michigan to pick up the cost of a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Republican Congressman Thaddeus McCotter.
The special September primary in the 11th congressional district is expected to cost $650,000. All of it to be paid for by local governments.
Judy Allen is the director of legislative affairs for the Michigan Townships Association. She’s asking the state to cover the cost of the primary.
Allen says the legislature could appropriate the money after the primary, but she hopes state lawmakers act before then.
“It would be our hope that it would be something they would look at very seriously and enact appropriation measures to cover the costs yet this fall,” said Allen.
Gov. Snyder has warned local governments not to expect any state help with the cost.
Congressman Thaddeus McCotter abruptly resigned his seat this summer, after failing to collect enough valid signatures to get his re-election bid on the August primary ballot.
