Downtown Grand Rapids to see an increase in bike racks

Folks in Grand Rapids could find it easier to ride their bikes if they plan to be downtown this summer.

Eric Pratt is with the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority. He says a proposal to install more than 200 off-street bicycle racks and six on-street racks is being finalized for the upcoming season.

Pratt says the goal of the increased bike racks is to “encourage people to consider other modes besides automobiles when coming downtown.”

The Grand Rapids parking commission voted in favor of the project despite the fact that six street racks will replace metered parking spots downtown. Pratt says they have even gone so far as to wave “their fee associated with the hooding of on-street parking meters, in support of the DDA's proposal to install on-street bicycle corrals.”

If approved by the city, construction for this project is expected to begin in early June.
