The family of a Flint man imprisoned in Iran is traveling to Europe to make the case for his release.
Amir Hekmati’s family released a statementthis morning announcing that they are traveling to Austria.
Talks are underway in Viennabetween the governments of Iran, the United States and several other countries concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
The talks concern placing limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. The talks face a deadline of June 30th to reach a final deal.
The family says it does not want to tie Amir Hekmati’s release to the talks. But they hope Iran’s efforts to reenter the international community and this being the month of Ramadan will present an opportunity.
Hekmati has spent more than three year in prison on spying charges. He denies the charges.
The former U.S. marine was visiting family in Iran when he was arrested.
