Property owners in a Detroit suburb are on the hook for a $1.4 million settlement with a man seen on video being repeatedly punched in the head by a police officer during a traffic stop.
Inkster's Treasurer Mark Stuhldreher says the levy on July tax bills will fund the settlement with Floyd Dent. Stuhldreher tells The Detroit News that Inkster's liability insurance allows only for payouts above $2 million.
Stuhldreher says a resident who has property with a $40,000 market value will pay roughly $130 more than usual, for example.
At Monday's City Council meeting, resident Sandra Studvent told the Detroit Free Press it's "horrible" and "taxes are high enough."
Last week, a judge ordered William Melendez to trial. Melendez was fired as an Inkster police officer but denies wrongdoing.
