Renewable energy is on the rise as more solar power is being produced in Michigan.

Consumers Energy has opened a solar garden at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

The 1-megawatt power facility will service about 200 people.

Roger Morgenstern  is a spokesperson at Consumers Energy and says customers can join a program to help fund renewable energy.

"We know there's a lot of interest in renewable energy, especially solar energy," Morgenstern says. "This is a way for our customers to be directly involved as we continue to look for other places we can build solar gardens."

"Having different energy sources makes us a stronger company, which makes for a stronger Michigan, which benefits everybody," he says.

The energy company also opened a 3-megawatt solar garden at Grand Valley State University back in April.

There are about two dozen solar farms in operation or planned in Michigan.
