A federal lawsuit has been filed against a Northern Michigan University administrator and four members of the student newspaper board of directors.
Cheryl Reed is faculty adviser for The North Wind. She says her First Amendment rights were infringed when the board fired her in April — allegedly because the paper printed unsavory stories about the university.
“We’re filing this as a matter of rights. It’s not for compensation,” said Reed.
She says she wants to “educate” the university.
“Ultimately I seek to achieve that the board, the president, the school population will understand… have a better understanding of the First Amendment press freedoms,” she said.
NMU Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services Steven Neiheisel and four board members are named as defendants in the suit, which was filed yesterday in Marquette federal court. They say they’ve done nothing wrong.
