Senate Democrat on DPS package: “I’m ashamed to be a legislator today.”

Jun 9, 2016

State lawmakers passed a $617 million dollar package for Detroit Public Schools on Wednesday night.

Democratic Senator David Knezek of District Five, which includes part of Detroit, joined us on Stateside to discuss the package.

"For the first time in my legislative career, I've got to tell you, I'm ashamed to be a legislator today."

It’s a big step backwards for DPS, he said.

“The package that we passed last night sets up Detroit Public Schools for failure,” Knezek said. “It sets up the children for failure.”

He said legislators missed an “incredible” opportunity to lead DPS to success.

“For the first time in my legislative career, I’ve got to tell you, I’m ashamed to be a legislator today,” he said.

Hear why Knezek thinks this package sets DPS kids up for failure above.
