Governor Rick Snyder says the federally created, bipartisan Council of Governors is the right forum to answer concerns about vetting refugees fleeing violence in the Middle East.
Snyder serves on the 10-member council, which advises the federal government on where states stand on homeland defense and national defense questions. It was created as part of a federal defense spending law. The governor says the group’s December meeting is an opportunity for the federal government to reassure governors and the public.
“What I think has happened in many respects is a lot of the general public has lot of questions and issues,” Snyder said.
The governor says he’s not ready to resume encouraging the re-settlement of more refugees from the Middle East in Michigan. But he did call the federal vetting process “extensive and rigorous.”
