The State Board of Education is in the early stages of putting together a new study to compare how Michigan’s charter and online schools are performing.
John Austin, the board’s president, said it's important to give parents information about the quality of the schools as the number of charter and online institutions in the state increases.
"What we want to do is make sure that until we get some quality control that we're having very strong accountability and public transparency," Austin said.
He also emphasized that the report will help struggling schools learn from other schools that are performing well.
"We have some authorizers that are very attentive and rigorous to ensure that their schools are educating kids well, and we have some authorizers that are paying no attention and may have many schools that are under performing," Austin said.
The report is scheduled to be released in the next few months, and Austin says the charter and online schools will be judged on similar metrics to public schools.
