Stateside for Monday, December 1, 2014

Today on Stateside:

  • After a two-week break, Michigan lawmakers return and roads are one of the top concerns the public has for the Legislature.  Listen to Jake Neher discuss how Governor Snyder wishes to address this problem.
  • Innovation is crucial in today’s fast-paced, high-tech world. U of M Professor Jeff DeGraff feels we need to innovate to keep Michigan’s economy moving forward.
  • The Nutcracker is timeless, but maybe it’s time to take a look at a reimagining the seminal ballet. Chris Van Allsburgh has been tasked by the Grand Rapids Ballet to become a key player in their creative team to reimagine the Nutcracker.
  • As winter begins to rear its head in Michigan, the memories of last year’s polar vortex still remain fresh in the minds of many Michiganders. Sara Schultz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake, is here to discuss what a polar vortex is and what to expect for this coming winter.
  • Campaign advertisements have been a way of life for as long as there have been hearts and minds for politicians to win. With the help of increasingly sophisticated technology, campaign advertisements in the near future may be a lot more personal than ever before. Listen to what Cliff Lampe, assistant professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan has to say.
  • Everyone says a dog is a man’s best friend. The Refurbished Pets of southern Michigan is a program that works to save shelter dogs from being euthanized by putting them with trainers. These trainers also happen to be prisoners. The RPSM’s Correctional Companion Program places dogs with specially trained prison inmates and Martin Daughenbaugh was one of those inmates.
