Stateside for Monday, October 5, 2015

Today on Stateside:

  • There’s been a dramatic spike in in lead levels in the blood of some Flint children. Scientists are blaming the city’s source for drinking water. Lindsey Smith updates us on the situation.

  • Over the past 70 years, Grace Lee Boggs has played a role in most of the major social movements this country has known. She died today in her home on the east side of Detroit. She was 100 years old.

  • Michigan author Bonnie Jo Campbell is out with a new book, a collection of stories called Mothers, Tell Your Daughters. She talks with us about our state’s influence on her writing, and about drawing on her own experiences to craft the stories.

  • Education and wealth are inextricable linked. Sadly, measures of family wealth and education attainment in the U.S. show a widening gap between the rich and poor. Bonnie Gettys and Megan Kursik tell us there’s a way to help every child in Michigan save for education.

  • Detroit’s Write A House program has chosen its second winner. Liana Aghajanian begins her two-year residency just north of Hamtramck early next year.
Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 8 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
