Stateside for Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015

Today on Stateside:

  • Gov. Rick Snyder's mantra of "relentless, positive action" hit a great big pothole this week. Negotiations over an elusive road funding plan hit what the governor is calling "an impasse" when Democrats would not agree to an income tax cut.

  • John U. Bacon joins us to talk about what we can expect going into this weekend's showdown between the Wolverines and the Spartans.

  • Re-Entry: The Orbit Magazine Anthology finally hit store shelves last month, celebrating two decades' worth of Detroit's alternative publishing history. Author Rob St. Mary and Orbit's creator and original publisher, Jerry Vile, sit down to talk about how punk rock and the alternative publishing scene shaped their lives.

  • For a century, Michigan has led the form and function of furniture, appliances, medical devices, automobiles, aerospace and agricultural products. But Michigan's business culture exists in a decaying, industrial-focused paradigm, one that has become arbitrary and thoughtless in the production of goods and how they are brought to market. Tom De Vries tells us that a design-minded approach will be key to our state's success in a new economy.

  • Last year 776 women put on their overalls, tied up their hair, and gathered at Willow Run to set a Guinness World Record for the most Rosie the Riveters. That record was taken away by the Rockin' Rosies of Richmond in California this August. On Oct. 24, Michigan's Rosies will try to retake the record.
