Stateside for Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Today on Stateside:

  • This spring, General Motors CEO Mary Barra got a very unusual email from Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne proposing a merger of their companies. As Michigan Radio's Tracy Samilton reports, after being rejected, Marchionne is now trying to convince investors to force GM to the altar.
  • The UAW and Fiat-Chrysler open contract talks today. GM talks began yesterday and Ford begins late next week. Detroit News business columnist Daniel Howes tells us about what to look for as the negotiations move forward.
  • Eight women. One weekend. Drummond Island.  We sit down with Michigan writer Mardi Jo Link to talk about her new book inspired by powerful friendships.
  • Iran has agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions. Congress now has 60 days to dissect the White House’s proposed deal, and we talk with Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee and Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga about their initial impressions.
  • A Michigan man has decided  to do for real what Tom Hanks pretended to do on film. Barclay Oudersluys of Birmingham joins us from the road in Logansport, Indiana, to tell us about his plan to run across America.
