Today, General Motors announced plans to largely withdraw its Chevrolet brand from Europe beginning in 2016.

The automaker says the decision was largely due to a challenging business model and the difficult economic situation in Europe.

Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang is celebrating its 50th birthday with a new design — and plans to go global.

Russell Padmore, business reporter for the BBC, joins us from London to talk about the latest auto news.

It has been one of the best selling cars of all time.

Since its inception in 1958, GM has sold more than 14 million Impalas (putting it in tenth place on 'best selling cars of all-time' lists).

Today, the tenth version of the Impala is being made at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, and at the Oshawa Assembly plant in Canada.

GM: Best November since 2007

General Motors says it had its highest November sales since 2007.

GM’s sales are up 3.4 percent over last year. Passenger cars are up 19-percent overall, with Buick bumping up 22 percent, and Cadillac sales up 30 percent.

General Motors set a global sales record for the first quarter of 2012.

But in the U.S., GM's market share dropped to a record low in the first half of the year -- 18.1 percent, according to Edmunds.com.

Now, GM's Chevrolet brand is offering a program it calls "love it or return it," to try to boost sales.  Chevy is the company's most important brand, accounting for 70 percent of its sales.

The company will let people return their new Chevy vehicles within 30 to 60 days after purchase for any reason.

The program also includes no-haggle pricing.

Edmunds.com analyst Michelle Krebs says it potentially could help GM boost its U.S. market share. GM lost market share, as did Ford, as Honda and Toyota came roaring back in the first half of the year with ample inventories on dealer lots. Both those companies lost market share in 2011 because of the tsunami that struck Japan.

"The other thing is, it's pretty cheap for GM to do this," notes Krebs.  "Because very rarely, when another company or GM has done a program like this, does anybody bring the car back."

Krebs says it's important for GM to get potential customers into its dealerships, because, in her opinion, the company's product lineup is not getting the attention it deserves.

GM says the "love it or return it" program will help show its confidence in its products- and perhaps lure additional customers to Chevy dealerships, many of which have been extensively upgraded.

According to U.S. Census data, there are 80 million American consumers approaching 30.

And it's no surprise car companies want their business.

“Today's younger generation will be a driving force in the automotive market in the years ahead,” said Mark Reuss, President of GM North America.

Chevrolet launched its new 2013 Sonic RS at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It comes with a 138-horsepower engine, and sportier look than the non-RS models.

Reuss said rather than advertising on television, the car company has chosen to go online to promote the new 2013 Sonic, which will be available at the end of this year.

Chevrolet also revealed two brand new concept cars with traits they say young buyers want - style and performance.

The Code 130-R is a four-seat coupe. The Tru 140s is based off the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze and the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended mileage.

 In southeast Michigan today, President Obama said free trade agreements passed this week by Congress will lead to more jobs and more economic opportunities.   

Obama and South Korean president Lee Myung-bak toured GM’s Orion assembly plant.   Obama says the new South Korea trade agreement should boost U.S. auto sales in Asia. 

Chevrolet kicked off the Dream Cruise with a parade of classic Chevys and fifty Chevy Volts down Woodward Avenue.

It’s the first Dream Cruise for GM CEO Dan Akerson. 

Akerson has been CEO of General Motors since September of last year.

Akerson says the passion people show for classic cars is no surprise.

"GM has been part of Detroit, Detroit’s been a major player globally in automotive, and the Dream Cruise is a celebration of the industry and the success and the rebirth of Detroit," Akerson said at an pre-parade celebration.

Chevrolet kicks off the Woodward Dream Cruise weekend with a parade of classic Chevy vehicles alongside 50 Chevy Volts - GM's modern flagship electric car with an extended range gas engine.

Chevy is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Spokesman Rob Peterson says fifty Volts will cruise quietly down Woodward Avenue on battery power – alongside some classic Chevys with their big V-8 engines.
