It’s the last day before Christmas.

And amidst the frantic last-minute shopping and traveling, some people in Flint took some time out for music.

For 78 years on Christmas Eve, a bank lobby in Flint has turned into a small concert hall.

Dozens of people filled the First Merit bank lobby in downtown Flint to listen to choir sing a mix of holiday standards and carols, as well as sing along themselves.

The University of Michigan Flint is considering buying part of the FirstMerit Bank complex in downtown Flint, a move that university officials hope will solve some of the college’s space issues.

U of M-Flint Chancellor Sue Borrego says the building would provide 120,000 square feet of space. She says the university would like to use the building for classrooms and administrative office space.

“We have a number of programs that absolutely can’t take any more students because of space,” says Borrego.

There are concerns that Flint could lose a major corporate headquarters.

Flint-based Citizens Bank is being bought by an Ohio bank for nearly a billion dollars.

Citizens has been an important institution in Flint since the bank was founded in 1871.  Citizens Bank loaned General Motors founder William Durant money he needed to start his manufacturing career.
