A literacy program is hoping to get more Genesee County children reading this summer. 

Ja’Nel Jamerson is the director of the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network.

He says it’s important for children everywhere to maintain their education levels during their summer vacation.  

But Jamerson says it’s especially important in Flint, where thousands of children were exposed to lead in their drinking water which can negatively affect their neurological development.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her family are invested in a company called Neurocore, a brain performance company. She sat on the board of the company until she became one of President Trump’s cabinet members.

A recent piece in the Washington Post looked at Neurocore. Its author, Ulrich Boser, is a senior fellow at the left-leaning Center for American Progress.

This week, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan will announce plans for a new class action lawsuit related to the Flint water crisis.

The ACLU’s new lawsuit will focus on the education rights of Flint area school-age children and what is needed to ensure their right to free and quality education.
