There’s new research out of the University of Michigan that suggests that being sexually frustrated can shorten lifespans. The lifespans of male fruit flies, that is.

U of M researchers toyed with the affections of male fruit flies for their study of sex and health.

The researchers immersed male fruit flies in an environment thick with female pheromones, but with no female fruit flies to mate with.

Some representatives in Lansing hope to classify sex between school employees and students, even if the student is 18 or older, as a criminal act.

The Michigan Senate passed SB 135 would make sex between school employees and students  a felony - "criminal sexual conduct in the third degree." It would be "punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years."

Sex with a minor is already illegal, but this bill would prohibit sex between school employees and students ages 18 and up to 21 years old, and up to 26 years old if the student is receiving special education services.

More from the Associated Press:

The bill's sponsor Republican Sen. Rick Jones of Grand Ledge says the bill is intended to "to safeguard students." He says there have been alleged instances in Michigan of teachers having sexual relations with students after they reached the age of 18.

The bill will now be sent to the House for consideration.

A similar bill was passed last year, but it stalled after passing the Senate. That bill had no age cap.

Consider this. We’ve still got more than a week left of March, and it looks like April and feels like August. Yesterday it was eighty-six in Ann Arbor, and two people think they saw a cougar -- a mountain lion, not the other kind -- on north campus.

We’ve got presidential candidates waving Etch-a-sketch toys instead of talking about Iran and inflation.

In other words, it’s not a normal year, and I want to make a suggestion to further radically change our world.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Senate has approved legislation aimed at expanding prohibitions against sex between school employees and students.

The Senate passed the main bill in a legislative package by a 36-2 vote Tuesday. The legislation advances to the House.

The legislation would make it a crime for school employees such as administrators and teachers to have sex with students even if the student is 18 or older.

Current law sets an age of consent in such cases at 18.
