University of Michigan Health System reviewing policies in wake of national meningitis outbreak

The national meningitis outbreak has officials at the University of Michigan Health System reviewing their policy for where they get some drugs that are in short supply.

The outbreak has been linked to tainted steroid injections from a ‘so-called’ compound pharmacy.     Four Michigan clinics used the tainted steroids to treat people with back pain.   None of the clinics are associated with UMHS.

Federal grant establishes HIV research center at University of Michigan

The University of Michigan Health System will house a new center for HIV research.

The University of Michigan Health System will house a new center for HIV research.

A new $21 million grant will establish a Center for HIV RNA Studies at the University of Michigan.

The National Institutes of Health grant will be distributed over a five-year period and is intended to help researchers better understand the virus on a molecular level.

Thousands of hospitals face penalties for high readmission rates

C.S. Mott Women and Children's Hospital is part of the University of Michigan Ann Arbor Health System, one of the organizations Medicare is penalizing for its high readmission rate.

Medicare is cracking down on hospital readmissions in a way that is going to hurt the bottom line of facilities in most parts of the nation.

VIDEO: UM Survival Flight adds three helicopters to the fleet

The University of Michigan Health System is phasing in three new helicopters to their Survival Flight fleet this week.

The new helicopters look like slender U of M football helmets. They can travel faster, farther and more quietly than the old helicopters, and carry additional equipment and fuel.

The new helicopters will replace their 14-year-old counterparts, the Bell 430. Flight nurses expressed enthusiasm for the new aircrafts, but they were also sad to see their old helicopters go.
